About us

The City of Berkeley is distinguished by its diversity, community engagement, and activism. Home to the University of California’s flagship campus, Berkeley’s population is highly educated, diverse, and engaged. The City lies on the east shore of the San Francisco Bay and is sheltered by rolling hills on its eastern border. Berkeley spans 10 square miles with 124,000 residents. Our climate is mild year-round, with cool summers. An outdoor focus is demonstrated with acres of open space, parks, and an abundance of bike lanes on City streets. Public transportation is well developed and reliable, with three Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations in Berkeley. All of these factors translate to an outstanding quality of life for Berkeley residents, with an abundance of outdoor, recreational, and cultural activities. The City of Berkeley lies in Alameda County and operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The City is divided into eight districts, and each district elects one representative to the City Council. The eight-member City Council serves four-year terms, and a mayor is elected at large – also on a four-year term. The City Council appoints a City Manager, who serves as the Chief Executive of the City. Berkeley provides a comprehensive range of municipal services to its population, many of which are not typically provided by cities. In addition to the customary city services, the City of Berkeley operates its own Health, Housing and Community Services Department, providing public health, mental health, and environmental health services to the community. The City also provides its own residential and commercial solid waste collection, recycling, and disposal service. In addition, the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Waterfront Department offers a number of summer camps and operates a 1,000-berth marina. Join the City of Berkeley team. In Berkeley, it's now easier than ever to start a dance studio, perform live music, or open a pet store thanks to a set of updates to the City's zoning ordinance. These are just a few examples from a sweeping set of code changes designed to support small businesses and a thriving cultural and arts community. The impressive work by staff in the Office of Economic Development and Planning and Development Department earned an Award of Excellence in the Economic Planning and Development category from the Northern California Chapter of the American Planning Association! Berkeley has four elections in 2024--the March primary, two special elections, and a November general election--making it the busiest election year on record since World War II! The City Clerk Department works behind the scenes to ensure the election process is transparent, accessible, and equitable. Leading up to election day, the team stays busy processing candidate nomination forms and initiative petitions to get on the ballot; tracking and enforcement of campaign finance regulations; coordinating with the County to ensure voters have fair access to vote by mail, drop box, or in person at vote centers; and handling countless other steps in the election process. Thank you to the Clerk Department for supporting Berkeley voters' ability to participate in local government!

When staff come together, we're better able to collaborate to deliver excellent public service. Our rotating department open house events allow staff from across the City to meet and learn from each other. At the City Manager's Office open house last week, staff learned how the City budget is developed, got resources for communicating better with the public, learned how the City supports the local arts community, explored Berkeley's business districts, and got insight into diversity, equity, and inclusion at the organization. City leadership and staff were able to connect over conversation, building relationships across departments.
