Reflecting Equity is a Latina- and woman-owned company, and instead of doing a post to celebrate our identities this Latinx heritage month, we want to call in a hurtful situation that our founder Chrissy Stachl, PhD experienced. It is so important for organizations to remember that marginalized folks exist as their full selves, with all their identities, ALL the time. We want to be recognized and valued all year, not only during months “made for” any one particular identity. Situations like this only amplify our marginalization and can take a toll on our emotional wellbeing and mental health. I hope this calls Start Small Think Big in to reflect, and helps our audiences think about the impact a situation like this can have on someone’s emotional wellbeing and mental health. Definitions: Tokenism is promoting individuals from marginalized groups to try give the impression that you are inclusive, but done is a way that is not sincere.
