The Food Waste Reduction Team at StopWaste is grateful to Berkeley Food Network—a thought partner and leader in the Alameda County food recovery sector—for allowing us to conduct an audit of their waste stream. Through this activity, we sought to gain a deeper understanding of the true cost of food recovery to organizations like theirs, who pay for the disposal costs of food packaging and donated food that is not suitable for redistribution. 🌍Californians send 11.2 billion pounds of food to landfills each year. Food waste contributes to more than half of methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills. Meanwhile, too many in our community struggle to afford healthy food. 🌍BFN is the largest Food Recovery Organization (FRO) in Northern Alameda County, each year diverting hundreds of tons of edible, surplus food to neighbors in need while saving the equivalent of 80 years of electricity consumption for one household! 🌍Food recovery is an important initiative that simultaneously addresses food security and climate change. However, the costs associated with sorting and waste hauling the unusable donations can be unsustainable for FROs, often lean nonprofits. 🌍In an effort to change that, we recently partnered with StopWaste and Cascadia Consulting Group to analyze the compost and waste at BFN. Follow the link below to see how this unique compost audit project could yield more support for food recovery efforts in our community. https://ow.ly/nyKY50RkhtU #earthday #foodrecovery

We’re proud to be part of the Pacific Coast Food Waste Commitment, and we’re happy to share the incredible work of our region’s #GroceryRetail signatories. Since 2019, #retailers have reduced the tons of unsold food in their stores in the region by 25%. This indicates an estimated 30% decrease in #GreenhouseGas emissions associated with unsold food across the #PacificCoast. To learn more about this work, read here: https://lnkd.in/g3UHG44h

“Secondhand or used does not necessarily mean that it’s in disrepair or it’s in poor condition,” says Judi Henderson founder of Mannequin Madness. Mannequin Madness, a local business in Oakland and a current StopWaste Reuse & Repair grantee, has played an important role in preventing hundreds of thousands of pounds of mannequins from ending up in the landfill through reuse. Join us on March 11 to learn about SB 54 at the Northern California Recycling Association (NCRA) Recycling Update!
Recycling Update 2024 Speaker Showcase: Timothy Burroughs, Executive Director at StopWaste! Join us at RU to learn from Timothy about, "Understanding SB 54, California’s new law to prevent pollution from packaging and plastic foodware." SB 54 is the most comprehensive legislation to date designed to reduce the volume of single use plastic packaging and foodware entering our communities, while also requiring that 100% of all single use packaging is recyclable or compostable by 2032. And the funds needed to implement the law are to be paid by the producers of single use packaging, rather than by local jurisdictions and ratepayers...This presentation will examine the positive potential of the law for our communities while also lifting up key opportunities for stakeholders to engage and mobilize around to ensure the law’s potential is met. More about: Timothy Burroughs is Executive Director of StopWaste, also known as the Alameda County Waste Management Authority. StopWaste is a government agency that works with local jurisdictions, schools, nonprofits and businesses to advance sustainability in Alameda County. Timothy has 18 years of experience working within public, community-serving agencies, including serving as Director of the Department of Planning & Development at the City of Berkeley and overseeing Berkeley’s climate action programs. We are excited to announce that StopWaste’s executive director, Timothy Burroughs, has been chosen as the chair of the #SB54 advisory board! He'll be joined by Doug Kobold and Veronica Pardo, who have been elected as vice chair and secretary, respectively. State law SB 54, also known as the Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act, sets new goals to reduce plastic packaging and requires that all forms of single-use packaging and foodware be recyclable or compostable by 2032. As part of the law’s requirements, an advisory board has been appointed with the task to identify barriers and solutions to creating a circular economy and to advise CalRecycle, producers, and producer responsibility organizations on implementation of this new law.
